Standards provide the structure that empowers the teacher to choose the best curriculum and instructional approaches to guide skill and knowledge development for students. The standards below are cross-walked with the Essential Industry Credentials.
Health & Safety Standards
Standard 1: Safety and Health in an Animal Science Environment
Students will apply essential health and safety practices for managing and maintaining equipment and tools required for various roles in animal science industries, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), adherence to safety protocols, safe handling of hazardous materials, and preparedness for emergency situations, in accordance with industry standards.

HOSTA Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Certificate
- Identify, describe, and demonstrate the effective use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to meet documentation requirements, including identifying animal-specific chemicals, such as disinfectants or pesticides.
- Locate emergency equipment, e.g., first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and review the emergency action and response plan, including labels and signage in animal care facilities, following OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HAZCOM).
